What if I told you that Jesus isn't the only religious leader whose followers claimed he rose from the dead and appeared to them afterward? Christians often treat the resurrection as this uniquely compelling piece of evidence for their faith, as if no other religious movement has ever made similar claims. But here's the thing, they have. A lot! And some of these cases come with far better documentation than anything we have for a wandering preacher in first-century Palestine.
In my latest video, I dive into six religious figures from just the last century and a half whose post-death appearances are actually better attested than Christ's. We're talking about movements with millions of followers, detailed contemporary accounts, and resurrection claims that persist to this day. And yet somehow, most Westerners have never even heard of these massive global movements!
So why do we give the Jesus story a pass?
That's the question worth sitting with. When we're raised in a culture steeped in Christian assumptions, it's easy to treat biblical resurrection claims with zero scrutiny while dismissing nearly identical stories from other traditions as obvious nonsense. But when you separate out the emotional element (the motivated reasoning, it's hard to accept or dismiss one without do the same for the rest. Once you see the pattern (charismatic leader, devoted followers, tragic death, reported appearances, etc.) it becomes impossible to ignore how universal this phenomenon really is!
I'm curious how many of my readers have heard of these cases.
We've got a "Tibetan monk" named Lobsang Rampa who turned out to be a British plumber's son from Devon who'd never set foot in Tibet. There's an Indian holy man named Sai Baba of Shirdi whose followers still perform daily rituals as if he's physically present. Several Indian copycats, Satya Sai Baba, Sri Ramakrishna, and Swami Vivekananda also grew large followings, and all have stories of post-death appearances to their followers. Satya Sai Baba would perform sleight of hand tricks and predicted the wrong day for his death, and yet today he still has as many as a hundred million followers!
And then there's an Ethiopian emperor named Haile Selassie whose coronation titles were pulled straight from the Book of Revelation, sparking a religious movement that spread worldwide through reggae music. Each story reveals something fascinating about human psychology, grief, belief, and the way movements form around the memory of a departed leader.
Understanding that post-death appearances happen across religions (complete with visions, dreams, physical sightings, and miracle claims) doesn't automatically disprove Christianity. But it does raise serious questions about whether "people claimed to see him after he died" is really the knockout argument apologists make it out to be. If the same kinds of experiences happen in religions we readily dismiss, shouldn't we at least apply consistent standards?
