In the latest 2024 Presidential Debate, former President Donald Trump was back to his old tricks—throwing out bold claims left and right. But how many of those claims hold water? In this video, I break down and fact-check 22 falsehoods from Trump’s 14-minute speech during the debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
From absurd claims about rebuilding the entire US military to wildly inaccurate claims about the U.S. economy and immigration, Trump didn’t hold back. One of his most egregious statements? That immigrants were taking and eating people's pets!
But he didn't stop there.
Almost every time he opened his mouth, another toxic lie spewed forth. He claimed Democrats were promoting infanticide, that he saved Obamacare (the very program he desperately tried to scrap), and that the U.S. left "$85 billion worth of military equipment in Afghanistan"—a number that’s not just exaggerated but flat-out wrong. The real figure? Roughly $7 billion in heavily used equipment, most of which will be unusable due to lack of maintenance, and none of which was state of the art or top-secret technology.

In addition to the misinformation listed above, Trump used the opportunity to once again push his discredited narrative about a stolen election, despite the fact that multiple courts—including those with his own appointees—found no evidence of fraud. His falsehoods ranged from absurd (claiming his pandemic response was phenomenal) to dangerous and divisive (demonizing immigrants, trans people, and pro-choice advocates).
So, what’s the takeaway?
It’s easy to watch a debate and come away more confused about the truth than when you first sat down. It's easy to ignore or overlook misinformation. But harmful lies have real world consequences and must be called out and countered because facts matter.
