Are Americans actually stupid, or has the rest of the world just been trained to enjoy laughing at us? The viral street interviews are real, and they’re brutal, but the American idiot stereotype is hiding a far more disturbing story than a few teenagers who can’t find Iran on a map.
You’ve seen the clips. Someone confidently answers that Africa is a country, Europe is a country, and Obama’s last name is Care. It’s easy to dunk. What you rarely see is anyone asking why the wealthiest, most technologically advanced country on Earth keeps producing citizens who can name every Kardashian but not a single Supreme Court justice. That gap is not an accident of geography or a quirk of national character.
Having grown up as an American kid overseas, I’ve spent my whole life hearing the dumb American joke (sometimes in languages the person assumed I couldn’t understand).
